The hardest thing about this business that we call film is actually
getting a break. It doesn't matter if you are an actor, producer,
writer, director, editor, camera person, make-up artist, whatever. You
may have the most amazing script, the most fantastic producing head on
your shoulders, the greatest directorial talent and an acting range
worthy of any award on the planet. It's all good and well, but how the
hell do you get yourself OUT THERE.
Let’s start at the very beginning. A very good place to start…
If entering film school was a dream, getting out can certainly compare to a nightmare! Now being optimistic, I am assuming that I am not alone in this situation and there is at least one more person on this oh-so-vast planet in a similar situation as mine. Yes, I am talking about the ‘Graduation Film’. Looking back at the blissful years of all day film screenings, late night debates and discussions, endless hours in the cafeteria spent talking about movies- a life encapsulated within the magic of cinema- I feel overcome with a terrible feeling of nostalgia. Now, I am being thrust out of ‘Eden’ into the big bad world with the ‘FILM MAKER’ label. But wait… I have to ‘earn’ the title!
We talked last week about how important a film's title was to an
overall box-office take, and argued that the title had to be somewhat
inviting and relevant to the flick's subject matter, but how about the
cast? How important is it to have a 'name' attached to a project? We
all know that the likes of Will Smith, Tom Cruise or even Ben Stiller
guarantee to get bums on seats, but how important is a name for a
movie's success in reality?
We asked two film students from The Prague Film School, Saule Norkute and Nastia Goncharova, about their interest in film and how and why they decided to pursue a film industry education.
