Student filmmakers give Paul a 3D shot in the arm!
By Paul Heath
Monday, 29 June 2009
Just the other day I had the rather unique opportunity to attend a film bash up in Bethnal Green, east London, a film/ art exhibition put on by a group of film students.

Knowing a couple of them, and being offered the opportunity to drink free beer and Sangria, I made the one hour and a half trip across town to attend the event only the slightest of prods.

Now, what was interesting about this event, compared to dozens of others that I have had the chance to attend in the past, is that one of the filmmakers shot his arty film in glorious 3-D - on no budget, to simply mide-blowing effect. Everyone was treated to a bevvy of drinks, and a single pair of red and blue specs to get the maximum impact from the visuals on show. I stood there, glass in hand, glasses on head in awe, thinking to myself, how did he do it?

I tracked him down after the screening to see just how it all came about, and how he managed to make the images in front of me jump out from the screen. In actual fact. It's all quite simple.

The filmmaker, Joseph Upton, used two mini DV cams, side by side, each one capturing the images required for the effect. The flick was then imported into the Apple editing package Final Cut Pro, then transferred to Adobe's After Effects to apply the red and blue filters needed to get the 3-D effect (with the use of the additional glasses - see below), and then re-imported back into Final Cut to polish it all off.

I am not very arty - well, not when it comes to art (just film), so I didn't really get what was going on in the video content itself, but these visuals blew me away so much, that I have asked Joe to upload the movie onto the ReelShow for you all to see. He has also promised to be interviewed so that he can explain his techniques in the production process of the movie itself. This really is something, so stay tuned to the site over the coming weeks to check it all out in a brand new masterclass series. In the meantime, I will leave you with a few images from the evening.

In 2010, 3-D is going to be huge with even James Cameron bringing his own masterpiece to the screen, AVATAR.

Stay tuned for more on this soon folks! For more low-budget 3-Dstuff, click it here for a great article .
