The World's Best Film Schools - Canada
By Paul Heath
Tuesday, 17 November 2009
We are now continuing our filmic journey around the world to bring you the best film schools around the globe. The next stop on our mission is Canada...

VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL

The first film school of the the three that we are showcasing is the Vancouver Film School in British Columbia, positioned on the west coast of Canada. The school offers a one year diploma in film using formats that include MiniDV, Pro DV (DVCAM/DVCPRO), and even 16mm. You can get to grips with editing machinery like Avid Xpress/DV, Avid (High End), Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Linear Video Editing Systems, ProTools and more. Foreigners are accepted into the school, but the tuition fees are quite high and are set at over 25,000 Canadian dollars so no, it's no cheap...

For the one year course, the Vanocuver Film School, or VFS as it is known offers 13 world-class programs spanning every aspect of the entertainment arts. Their unique educational model balances theory and hands-on production so that, after just one year, you're prepared to launch your dream career in the industry. Vancouver also has a thriving film industry with many productions choosing to film in the city as it offers lower costs to facilities in LA. It even looks like the City of Angels!!!

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

Next up is the University of Toronto in Ontario. This school offers: Diploma (1 Year), Diploma (3 Years+), Under Graduate Degree (Bachelors), Short Beginner Courses, so a HUGE selection... The school embraces all of the major formats (MiniDV, Pro DV (DVCAM/DVCPRO), SVHS, VHS, Hi8, Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm) and many of the recognised editing systems (Avid Xpress/DV, Media 100, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro). This University is just huge, offering courses in literally everything. In fact there are more than 800 different undergraduate programs and more than 400 different graduate and professional programs. In all of these programs, students learn directly from some of the world's top professors -- teachers with a track record of discovery, collaboration, and innovation -- according to the official site.

This is the one to get into.

CONCORDIA - MONTREAL

I was also trying to find a decent film school in Montreal, which is over to the east coast of the country and found this little gem, the Concordia University. The average age of equipment used here is a little older, but according to sources, the film school uses MiniDV, Pro DV (DVCAM/DVCPRO), SVHS, VHS, Super 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm stock for their students. You can also get to grips with Avid (High End), Media 100, Final Cut Pro, Flatbed Film Editing and ProTools. The tuition fee is also a little more affordable, at under 5000 Canadian dollars for their main course.
